Root canal treatment is generally required if you have an abscess under a tooth or if the tooth is very sensitive to hot and cold, and the pain is lasting for more than about 15 minutes, at this point the pain is usually keeping you awake at night. Root canal treatment removes the sensitive part of the tooth and/or the infected part of the tooth. This stops the pain and allows you to keep your tooth. It prevents you having a gap, allows you to use the tooth again to eat with and keeps your smile intact.
For this treatment to be successful it needs to be done carefully. There have been many advances in root canal treatments over the last few years meaning that although the treatment can be a little time consuming it is highly successful and painless. If a tooth is saved or lost will depend on the standard of the root canal treatment so this is a treatment that all our dentists have undergone extra training in.
