Nowadays fillings are not only functional, but can be natural looking as well. Many people now want white fillings which can restore the teeth back to their original appearance unlike silver fillings that show when you laugh or smile. Here at Dental Care with Jill Cooper we offer both Amalgam and Tooth Coloured Fillings.

Both amalgam and white fillings have advantages and disadvantages and we will advise you on what will be best for you.

Advantages of White Fillings

  • Improved appearance of teeth giving you more confidence to smile and laugh
  • Material bonds to tooth hence increasing the strength
  • Can help to prevent tooth fracture
  • Usually less tooth has to be removed to place a white filling than a metal filling
  • No environmental impact

Advantages of Amalgam Fillings

  • Strong and long lasting
  • Easy to place
  • Cheaper than white fillings

Disadvantages of White Fillings

  • After receiving a composite, a patient may experience postoperative sensitivity.
  • Composites tend to wear out sooner than silver fillings in larger cavities, although they hold up as well in small cavities
  • They are technique sensitive to place
  • The shade of the composite can change slightly if the patient drinks tea, coffee or other staining foods.

Disadvantages of Amalgam Fillings

  • The grey colour
  • They do not bond to teeth, but simply fill the hole and teeth with large amalgam fillings can be quite weak as a result
  • Thermal expansion of the filling can lead to tooth fracture
  • Retentive features need to be added to cavities increasing the amount of good tooth that needs to be removed
  • Amalgam contains a large percentage of Mercury a highly toxic element. In its set form the mercury is in an alloy form which is harmless, but mercury can be liberated from fillings when they are placed, removed and possibly during eating. There is no evidence that the small amount of mercury liberated is harmful to people, however there is increasing concern over environmental pollution caused by mercury being released from dental amalgam polluting the environment and hence there are moves to ban the use of dental amalgam.
