Dental decay is caused by bacteria on the teeth converting sugars that we have eaten, to produce acid. This acid then acts on the teeth, which are mainly made of minerals, to cause demineralisation of the tooth, which then causes the breakdown of the tooth structure, producing a hole in the tooth. This, left unchecked will continue to destroy the tooth and the cavity (hole) will eventually reach the pulp (living tissue in the tooth). This is usually associated with pain often initially stimulated with hot and cold, but as the process progresses the pain can come on by its self and be quite severe.
The end result is the death of the living tissue in the tooth and the formation of a dental abscess under the tooth. This again is often associated with pain, especially when biting on the tooth. It can also be associated with swelling, discharge of puss and the loosening of the tooth.
