Basic Dental Health

  • Visit your dentists at your recommended recall interval
  • Brush your teeth twice a day, once last thing at night and at one other time for 2 minutes
  • Use the appropriate fluoridated toothpaste. At age 0-3 a smear of at least 1000ppm Fl- toothpaste, after this age a pea sized amount of at least 1350ppm Fl- toothpaste
  • Brush in a systematic fashion making sure all tooth surfaces are clean
  • Brush teeth and spit. Do not rinse!
  • Fluoride is more effective three times a day consider introducing a daily fluoride mouthwash at some other time than brushing
  • The frequency and amount of sugary food and drinks should be reduced and, when consumed it should be limited to mealtimes.
  • Sugars should not be consumed more than four times per day
  • Avoid frequent intake of acidic foods or drinks – keep them to mealtimes.
  • Never hold, swish or froth acidic drinks in your mouth
  • Never eat anything that containing sugars within one hour of bedtime
  • Do not brush immediately after eating or drinking acidic food or drinks.
  • Do not brush immediately after vomiting
  • Stop smoking
  • Reduce alcohol intake to the maximum recommended levels if intake is above these levels
